Two powerful programs available to help schools within New York State as they prepare for the Dignity for All Students Act.
As the struggles of LGBTQ youth have become public knowledge, our communities, schools, faith organizations, state and nation are responding to the urgency of this situation. While we cannot change what has occurred, we can work together to learn, understand and create safer, more compassionate environments for all our children.
CULTIVATING COMPASSION
Cultivating Compassion is an innovative sensitivity training program for youth utilizing the art of storytelling as a tool to enhance understanding, empathy and respect amongst students and faculty. Multi-cultural story material and classroom discussions address the issues of diversity (i.e., racial/ethnic, religious and social class differences, as well as gender identity & expression, and sexual orientation-perceived or real) and bullying.
Cultivating Compassion is delivered over the course of four (4), weekly class sessions within self-contained classrooms for each grade level selected. This unique program addresses sensitive content through a carefully crafted, creative approach designed to enhance understanding and empathy.
I am currently working with schools located in the Mid-Hudson region of New York State to reduce bullying by helping students:
- Recognize the impact and dynamics of bullying
- Improve self-awareness, empathy, understanding and cultural competency
- Identify and support the school’s commitment and expectations related to bullying, harassment, name-calling and disrespect
- Brainstorm and clarify action steps needed to improve support and help students who are bullied, and
- Identify supports available within the school system, the family and community.
CLOSET CHRONICLES
Closet Chronicles blends the power of story, personal narrative and experience, and professional resources together to enhance awareness, understanding and compassion for the struggles and issues confronting our LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered, queer and questioning) youth.
This interactive and engaging workshop is an invaluable tool for parents, community members, and professionals working with youth (e.g. teachers, administrators, counselors, social workers, etc.).
LGBTQ youth need supportive allies whom they can count on to recognize and address bullying & homophobia. All youth deserve to feel loved and valued.
Closet Chronicles was designed to cultivate compassion and provide school districts and organizations with invaluable resources as they strive to answer this serious call.
Learn how you can bring Closet Chronicles to your school, faith community, community-based organization, etc. and watch with delight as you become a witness to amazing transformation.
